Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota will be the guest speaker at The Tennessean Sports Awards, presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans, on June 6.

The second annual event, which honors the region’s top high school athletes, will be at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

“The Tennessean is very proud — with the help of all of our sponsors and partners — to bring the Sports Awards to Nashville and Middle Tennessee again in 2017,” said Laura Hollingsworth, president of The Tennessean and TN Media. “It’s so important we recognize, encourage and celebrate these young adults and the hard work they put in to being their personal best. We’re going to make it a night our student athletes won’t ever forget.”

Mariota is entering his third season as the Titans’ starting quarterback. The Heisman Trophy winner led the Titans to a 9-7 record in 2016, the team’s best record since 2011. He is currently rehabilitating a broken leg he suffered Dec. 24 against Jacksonville.

“We are pleased to have Marcus Mariota as our guest speaker,” said Michael Anastasi, The Tennessean’s vice president and executive editor. “Marcus has already had a major impact on the football field and also in our community in his two years in Nashville. We look forward to hearing his inspirational messages in what will be a special night.”

More than 30 individuals will be honored in the program. Twenty-five high school individual sport players of the year will be announced at the event, as well as eight premium awards for the top coach, courage, academic, leadership and good sportsmanship.

The evening will end with the naming of the top male and female high school athletes.

In 2016, , which was attended by more than 1,200 athletes, coaches, parents and fans of high school athletics.

Honored athletes will receive tickets to the event for themselves plus two additional tickets each for guests. Others can purchase tickets for $35 online at .

Farm Bureau Health Plans returns as the presenting sponsor for the event.

“It was a privilege to take part in the 2016 Middle Tennessee Sports Awards and we are equally proud to be a part of this year’s event,” said Anthony Kimbrough, chief executive officer of Farm Bureau Health Plans. “Peyton Manning’s role in last year’s inaugural event was especially memorable and we are just as excited to have on board for 2017 Marcus Mariota, who is on the front end of what we expect to be a Hall-of-Fame career.

“We appreciate the opportunity to recognize the hard work our student-athletes put in both on the field and off — along with their parents, teachers and coaches. These athletes are the future of our local communities, and Farm Bureau Health Plans is proud to celebrate their accomplishments.”

Other sponsors include the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, Kroger, the Ford Ice Center, Dillard’s, State Water Heater and the Nashville Sports Council.

“The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is thrilled to be a part of the Middle Tennessee Sports Awards again this year, and we are especially excited to be partnering with Marcus Mariota in honoring the top high school athletes from our area,” said Dan Dummermuth, president and CEO, YMCA of Middle Tennessee. “Marcus has been a great example throughout his career of an athlete committed to teamwork and good sportsmanship, the two foundational blocks of YMCA youth sports.”

Nike has come on as a national award sponsor. The I AM SPORT AWARD, presented by NIKE, will be featured in 22 other Gannett-owned media sites.

The Tennessean is working with media partner 104.5-FM The Zone to publicize the event. The announcement of The Tennessean Sports Awards was announced simultaneously Monday at 4:30 p.m. on the radio station’s “3HL” show and on Tennessean.
